This series chronicles the lives, times and works of the greatest artists in history and explores their styles with detailed explanations of their techniques. Each episode includes on-location footage with expert commentary and analysis. Rembrandt This is an in-depth look at Rembrandt van Rijn s unsurpassed ability as a portraitist and his famous series of self-portraits, which demonstrate his genius. His many other types of works are also featured, including group portraiture, landscapes, etchings, drawings and religious paintings. When he died in 1669, he left behind a stupendous body of work, the quality of which has been matched by few other artists in history, if at all. Vermeer Born in 1632, only three dozen paintings survive from Jan Vermeer s working life. His subject matter is famous for the portrayal of ordinary, everyday life in the 17th Century. Although he remained almost unknown until 200 years after his death, he is acclaimed for his ability to depict the effects of light on his subjects. Rubens A Flemish painter born in 1577, Peter Paul Rubens' work combined Renaissance technique with a new boldness of approach towards color and brushwork. His masterful depiction of surface texture is seen in his many religious images. Rubens' enduring achievement as a portrait artist makes him one of the giants of art history. Van Dyck Anthony van Dyck was inspired by the Venetian Renaissance masters Titian and Giorgione. His enthusiasm for rich colors and his remarkable ability to duplicate the texture of fabric characterized his best works. He is one of the greatest portrait artists, producing unrivaled portraits of nobles and royalty. Bosch The career of Hieronymus Bosch is among the most mysterious of all the great artists of history. Though he was well-known by the time of his death in 1516, virtually nothing of his life is known today. His surviving works are also enigmatic, filled with symbolic images of the Middle Ages. Bosch's remarkable visions of the fantastic have great appeal today. Bruegel The life of Pieter Brugel the Elder will always remain something of a mystery. There are few details of his 16th-Century life. He was deeply inspired by his great Dutch predecessor, Hieronymus Bosch. His depictions of peasant life are amongst the greatest in Western Art. He was also one of the first masters of landscape painting and his satirical drawings are still relevant. (6 DVD) approx. 5 hrs.

Until now, there has not been a biography in English of Catherine de Medici for many years. Yet she was one of the most influential women in 16th-century Europe.
A team of historians and scholars have revised and enlarged the 1959 Tappert edition into almost a wholly new book with extensive annotations. These are the core documents of 16th-century Lutheran theology: the Augsburg Confession, the Large Catechism, the Schmalkald Articles, etc.
