Dr. Martin's analysis reveals the central action of O'Connor's stunning fiction - the violent breaking-in of grace into lives barren of the awareness of God. As a preeminent 20th-century Catholic fiction writer. O'Connor's work has set the standard for how serious writers must address God's salvific actions while maintaining the highest standards of literature. "Highly recommended." -Thomas Howard

Director Christopher Nolan's (MEMENTO) eclectic resume gains another interesting entry with THE PRESTIGE. Set in early 20th-century London, the film centres on the bitter rivalry between two magicians who go to increasingly dangerous lengths to upstage one another. Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman, X-MEN) and Alfred Bordon (Christian Bale, BATMAN BEGINS) start out as apprentice magicians, but when an elaborate stunt goes horribly wrong, they?re driven beyond the point of reconciliation. In the years that follow, Robert grows wildly jealous of Alfred's superior talents, so in a last ditch attempt to gain some artistic ground, he sends his beautiful assistant Olivia (Scarlett Johansson, MATCH POINT) to seduce Alfred and steal his secrets. While comparisons to Neil Burger?s THE ILLUSIONIST are inevitable-both films are set around the same time period and both deal with suspicious attitudes towards magic-Nolan's film concentrates more on the dynamic between these two characters and the rivalry that governs their every move. As the narrative twists and turns down a number of unexpected avenues, the viewer is drawn into a complex world of smoke and mirrors, where nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted. Bale and Jackman perfectly execute their roles, winding up the tension to an unbearable degree as they wilfully enter into some dangerously competitive patterns of behaviour. Michael Caine makes his second appearance in a Nolan film, almost reprising his role of Alfred in BATMAN BEGINS by playing Cutter, Jackman's mentor; and Johansson pouts and flounces across the elaborate sets like a classic Hollywood screen siren. Stylistically, THE PRESTIGE is full of dark, gloomy imagery and a palpable sense of menace. It's not an easy film to digest, but fans of intelligent cinema will be richly rewarded with a film that delivers on both style and substance. - This product is available for rent and purchase.

George Ryan’s ITC Migrate is a highly condensed sans serif display face that effectively complements ITC Adderville. Migrate represents what Ryan calls a “more highly evolved version” of a typeface he designed for Bitstream in 1991 called Oz Handicraft. “Both faces, “ says Ryan, “are based on designs of the popular early 20th-century type designer Oswald Cooper.” His inspiration came from drawing samples found in the Book of Oz Cooper, published in 1949 by the Society of Typographic Arts in Chicago. “Oz worked extensively with the sans serif form long before it became popular in the States, eschewing a popular belief of the time that sans serifs were only skeletons of letters.” Where Oz Handicraft was informal and quirky, ITC Migrate has a more restrained feel. “The uppercase characters and figures, in particular, have been reworked, ” says Ryan, ”resulting in a more formal and traditional, compressed sans serif typeface.”

Resistance to Exercise: A Social Analysis of Inactivity is an in-depth exploration of the social forces that perpetuate a sedentary lifestyle. Author Mary McElroy provides an insightful analysis of the social problems associated with physical inactivity and recommends solutions for re-engineering environmental and social institutions to increase physical activity. Part I describes the scope of the sedentary living problem in contemporary society and offers a history of physical activity and health throughout the 20th century. Part II discusses the role of changing families and the impact of school, work environments, and the health care system on exercise. Part III analyzes how the social institutions discussed in part II as well as the community at large affect attitudes toward physical activity. Resistance to Exercise: A Social Analysis of Inactivity broadens and expands current notions about individual responsibility for lifestyle changes.
