Mountaineers Prove to Georgia and the BCS That They Are One of the Best Atlanta, GA. January 3, 2006. What might have been the biggest upset in BCS history also may have proved to be the biggest win in West Virginia football history. Feeling like a team that had gotten no respect, the Mountaineers jumped all over the SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs and held on at the end to capture the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl Championship. Despite being champions of the Big East Conference with an overall 2005 record of 10-1, the Mountaineers were heavy underdogs entering the 72nd Nokia Sugar Bowl, played for the first time ever outside of New Orleans. West Virginia used that as motivation to fuel an early 28-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Led by two sensational freshmen, Quarterback Pat White and Running Back Steve Slaton, the Mountaineers ran all over the nation`s fourth rated defense and helped accumulate 382 rushing yards. Georgia rallied and cut the West Virginia lead to 31-21 at halftime, demonstrating a comeback was still possible. But the Mountaineers would not quit, and despite Georgia cutting the lead to three, held on with one of the most daring calls in bowl history.
